The Waldner family, which runs the Romantik Hotel Oberwirt in Marling, has been engaged in viticulture for eleven generations now. Josef Waldner satisfied his lifelong dream when acquiring the Eichenstein winery, where he put into practice his passion for modern viticulture: He then built a new farmstead including a wine cellar and a visitors’ chalet. The Eichenstein vineyard estate lies on 500–550 metres above sea level at mount Freiberg above Merano. The microclimate of the unique location and soil (consisting of porphyry quartzite and granite) are the best conditions for the cultivation of high-quality wines. From 2007 to 2011, varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Pinot Noir were planted out. Three more sites at the hereditary Oberwirt farm in Marling belong to the Eichenstein vineyard estate. Here, the experienced oenologist Hartmann Donà has worked alongside Josef Waldner for ten years now, to create great wines. Other members of the prestigious staff include Marius Müller, deputy factory manager in charge of viticulture, wine-making, tastings, and sales events. Together, the trio upholds a dedication to keep the wine as natural as possible, according to the principle "maximalism in the vineyard and minimalism in the wine cellar". The young viticulturist Andrea Waldner follows the family tradition as the designated successor to her father.
